The Art of Enjoying Good Beer Alone: Is It Okay?
In recent years, many of us have found ourselves navigating the blurred lines between social engagements and solitary enjoyment, especially when it comes to indulging in our favorite beverages. One thought-provoking topic that frequently arises is whether it’s socially acceptable to savor a well-crafted beer solo, particularly when beer is traditionally viewed as a communal experience.
Over the past year, as remote work became the norm for countless individuals, some have cultivated new rituals. For me, this has meant curating a selection of unique beers to savor at the end of the day. Each evening around 6 PM, I find joy in cracking open a bottle that boasts intricate flavors and a rich story, all while I prepare dinner. However, I’ve recently started grappling with a sense of guilt for enjoying these delights without company.
My partner often raises an eyebrow at my inclination to indulge in a $35 barrel-aged sour or a $76 fruited lambic on a midweek evening. Her remarks often center on whether I should save these special brews for gatherings, allowing others to share in the experience. Yet, there’s something deeply fulfilling about experiencing the complex notes and aromas of a fine beer in solitude, without the need to defend its worth as simply “just expensive.”
This brings me to ponder: Is this desire for solitary appreciation peculiar? While I frequently come across enthusiastic posts about bottle shares where enthusiasts gather to enjoy high-end, rare brews together, I can’t help but wonder if I’m overlooking a vital communal element of beer enjoyment. However, considering that many casual drinkers may struggle to distinguish between hop varietals like Citra and Mosaic, I wonder if there’s room for both shared and solitary experiences.
So, what about you? Do you reserve special beers for gatherings, or is it perfectly acceptable to take the time to enjoy a superb brew on your own? In the end, the appreciation of great beer—whether in solitude or in company—may simply boil down to personal preference. Share your thoughts and let’s explore the complex world of beer enjoyment together!
