Does anyone else feel guilty drinking beer alone because it’s supposed to be a social experience?

The Joy of Solo Beer Appreciation: Is It Really a Social Experience?

For many, enjoying a craft beer is synonymous with social gatherings—friends sharing laughter and stories over a pint or two. But what happens when this social ritual transforms into a solitary experience?

After spending a year working from home, I’ve adopted a delightful routine: selecting a unique beer each evening around 6 PM while preparing dinner. These aren’t just any brews; they’re exceptional craft beers, bursting with flavor and complexity, deserving of careful tasting. However, I’ve recently found myself grappling with a nagging sense of guilt when I savor these moments alone.

My partner often raises an eyebrow, questioning the need to indulge in a $35 barrel-aged sour or a $76 fruited lambic mid-week, simply for my own enjoyment. “Why not save them for when we have guests?” she asks. But the truth is, I cherish these quiet evenings where I can fully immerse myself in the flavors without having to justify my choices. For me, it’s about exploring the nuanced Brett character and appreciating what makes each beer unique, free from any conversations that might shift my focus away from the experience.

This leads me to ponder: Is it strange to revel in fine beer solo? I see countless posts on social media showcasing gatherings where enthusiasts share rare and expensive brews. While part of me wonders if I’m missing out on that communal joy, I can’t help but think that not everyone can truly distinguish between beer varieties. Most casual drinkers might struggle to tell the difference between Citra and Mosaic hops, despite the pride we aficionados take in our knowledge.

So, is it acceptable to enjoy a fine beverage by oneself? Or is there an unspoken rule that great beer is meant to be shared? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you reserve your prized bottles for gathering occasions, or do you indulge in the pleasure of appreciating exceptional beer alone?
