Embracing Solitude: The Joy of Enjoying Beer Alone
In today’s world, where social interactions often revolve around shared experiences, the concept of savoring a fine beer solo might raise eyebrows. However, many find themselves in a similar situation, particularly those who have spent extended periods working from home.
For the past year, I’ve established a delightful ritual: as the clock strikes six, I open a carefully selected craft beer while preparing dinner. Not just any beer, mind you—I’m talking about exceptional brews with intricate flavors and rich complexities that truly deserve my attention. Yet, I recently found myself grappling with a feeling of guilt. Is it wrong to enjoy these moments without a social companion to share them with?
My girlfriend has teased me about my preference for indulging in pricey brews, like a $35 barrel-aged sour or a $76 fruited lambic, during a typical Wednesday evening. “Why not save those for when we have friends over?” she asks, encouraging me to extend the experience to a broader audience. But herein lies my dilemma: I relish the peace that comes with enjoying the subtle nuances of beer without the need to justify my choices or dissect what makes these flavors special.
Am I alone in this mindset? I often find myself scrolling through my social media feeds, where friends showcase their communal beer tastings and bottle shares featuring rare and exquisite offerings. While I appreciate the spirit of togetherness these gatherings foster, part of me wonders if I’m missing out on another vital dimension of beer appreciation—the communal aspect that brings people together over shared experiences.
Yet, it’s important to remember that not everyone has the palate to discern distinct hops or malt character, making me question whether saving my special brews for company is even necessary. Is it really shameful to enjoy a magnificent beer on my own terms?
Ultimately, everyone has their own style of enjoying beverages, and solitary sipping can be just as valid as toasting among friends. Whether you reserve your finest beers for special occasions or indulge in them privately, appreciating the craft and complexity of a great brew is what matters most. So, let’s raise our glasses—whether alone or in a crowd—and celebrate the joy of beer, no matter the setting.
