Does anyone else feel guilty drinking beer alone because it’s supposed to be a social experience?

The Solo Beer Ritual: Is It Okay to Enjoy Craft Beers Alone?

In recent times, many of us have found ourselves re-evaluating our daily routines, especially with the shift towards working from home. One interesting development in my own life has been the discovery of a newfound ritual: enjoying a meticulously chosen craft beer while preparing dinner each evening.

Around 6 PM, as I dive into meal prep, I indulge in the simple pleasure of cracking open a flavorful beer—something that boasts complexity and character, clearly deserving of thoughtful appreciation. However, I’ve recently begun to wrestle with a feeling of guilt. Isn’t beer meant to be a social experience? Shouldn’t I be sharing these moments with friends or family rather than savoring them in solitude?

My partner, for instance, raises her eyebrows at my choice of vintage brews—like a $35 barrel-aged sour or a $76 fruited lambic—on an ordinary Wednesday night. She often asks why I don’t save such exquisite selections for gatherings, when there are others to share in the experience. Yet, there’s an undeniable joy in savoring the unique flavors alone, exploring the intricate notes without needing to justify my appreciation.

This leads me to wonder: is it unusual to enjoy exceptional beers on my own? On social media, I see numerous posts showcasing groups gathered around bottles of rare and pricey beers, celebrating the communal aspect of craft brewing. Part of me questions whether I’m missing out on something special by being solo. Yet, let’s be honest—many people struggle to identify subtle differences between various hops, so do they truly grasp the nuances I savor?

It begs the question: do others frequently reserve their treasured brews for social occasions, or is it perfectly acceptable to relish great beer in solitude? In the realm of hobbyists and aficionados, the answer may vary widely. For me, it comes down to appreciating the moment and the flavor, regardless of company.

So, what are your thoughts? Is it truly a faux pas to enjoy your favorite craft beer by yourself, or does solitude lend its own kind of richness to the experience? Let’s raise our glasses—whether alone or together—to the joys of beer appreciation, however and whenever it may happen. Cheers!
