Unearthed Treasure: Sampling a Vintage Barley Wine
While organizing my home, I stumbled upon an intriguing find—a bottle of barley wine from High Water Brewing, dating back 10 to 15 years. As I reminisced about this brewery, I recalled that it is no longer in operation, which piqued my curiosity about the bottle’s condition. Would it be drinkable, or would I be faced with a less-than-pleasurable experience?
The Big Taste Test
With a mix of excitement and apprehension, I decided to open the bottle and see what years of aging had done to this vintage brew. Surprisingly, the experience surpassed my expectations. The initial aroma, while slightly musty, was not overpowering. It hinted at the passage of time, yet it was clear that some of the beer’s character had withstood the years.
As for the flavor profile, it delivered a delightful experience. Although I’m not a connoisseur of barley wines, I found it surprisingly enjoyable. The carbonation, while slightly diminished, remained adequate, providing that familiar effervescence without feeling flat. The taste unveiled roasty notes with subtle hints of chocolate, complemented by a noticeable alcohol presence—boasting an impressive ABV of 11%.
Conclusion
To my relief, this vintage barley wine turned out to be quite drinkable! It certainly does not resemble the cliché of stale or “wet cardboard” that often accompanies aged beers. Instead, it offered a unique blend of flavors that made my tasting experience enjoyable. Thank you to everyone who weighed in on this little adventure!
