The Etiquette of Tipping: When Bartenders Go Above and Beyond
Last night, I visited a trendy new bar that specializes in Belgian beers. As I settled in and scanned the drink menu, I ordered a Belgian gueuze, mentally bracing myself for the inevitable mispronunciation from the bartender. To my pleasant surprise, the bartender effortlessly pronounced it “the guhz” and proceeded to share her extensive knowledge about the wild fermentation process behind the brew. Without me even prompting her, she suggested a delightful cheese pairing to enhance my tasting experience.
I found myself momentarily stunned—it’s not every day you meet a bartender who not only knows their craft but genuinely engages with patrons about it. In my experience, many bartenders either shy away from pronouncing complex names or boldly butcher them while pouring from the nearest tap.
Her expertise and enthusiasm truly impressed me, prompting me to leave a generous 30% tip. However, this encounter got me wondering: is there an unspoken rule regarding tipping based on a bartender’s knowledge and skill? Should we adjust our tips when we encounter a bartender who demonstrates a true understanding of the drinks they’re serving?
It raises the question of whether there’s a tipping scale that factors in a bartender’s dedication and expertise. Do you feel inclined to tip more when a bartender shows exceptional knowledge, or is that expectation of service already built into the standard tip percentage?
In a world where the dining and drinking experience is becoming increasingly sophisticated, perhaps it’s time we acknowledge the value of expert service by tipping accordingly. How do you handle situations when you come across a bartender who clearly knows their stuff? Sharing those experiences can help define what great service looks like in the eyes of discerning patrons.
So next time you find yourself at a bar and are served by someone who takes pride in their craft, don’t hesitate to acknowledge their efforts with a tip that reflects their expertise. After all, great service deserves recognition!
