The Art of Pretentious Beer Talk: Confessions of a Craft Beer Enthusiast
As craft beer enthusiasts, we often find ourselves navigating a complex vocabulary that can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. At a recent bottle share, for instance, the atmosphere was charged with excitement as attendees sampled a barrel-aged sour. In the midst of this tasting experience, I caught myself confidently proclaiming how much I “truly appreciated the characteristic brett interacting with the oak tannins to create some beautiful phenolic compounds.”
Now, here’s the kicker—I have absolutely no clear understanding of what phenolic compounds actually are. It seems I had unwittingly stitched together a cocktail of wine jargon and fragments of information I’d half-absorbed from brewing podcasts.
What made the situation even more comical was the approving nods from my peers, which prompted me to press on with even more elaborate terminology. I ventured into claiming that the beer was “expressing local terroir through indigenous microflora,” completely oblivious to the actual meaning behind those words.
To add to my list of faux pas, I recently caught myself using the phrase “mouthfeel complexity” during another tasting. In reality, I was simply attempting to articulate that the beer had a rich and thick texture.
Reflecting on these moments, I can’t help but chuckle at how much of our conversation revolves around borrowed phrases and artisanal jargon. Half the time, it feels like we’re playing a game of craft beer Mad Libs—stringing together terms we’ve overheard in hopes that no one will call us out on our lack of understanding.
So, I ask you, fellow beer lovers: do you share this sentiment? Have you ever found yourself caught in a similar situation, navigating the delicate balance between genuine appreciation and the art of pretentious conversation? Let’s embrace the fun and folly of our craft beer journeys together!
