The Art of Pretentious Beer Talk: Confessions from a Weekend Tasting
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending a bottle share event that turned into an unexpected lesson in the art of craft beer jargon. It was a vibrant gathering filled with enthusiasts, each eager to showcase their latest finds and exchange opinions. Amidst the clinking of bottles and lively discussions, I found myself diving headfirst into a conversation about a freshly uncorked barrel-aged sour.
As the enticing aroma wafted through the air, I confidently proclaimed my appreciation for the “characteristic brett interacting with the oak tannins, creating some beautiful phenolic compounds.” However, little did I know that I was merely stringing together buzzwords that I had encountered in various wine and brewing discussions without truly grasping their meanings. In that moment, my understanding of ‘phenolic compounds’ was embarrassingly tenuous at best—perhaps a mix of wine jargon and snippets from a brewing podcast I had once heard.
What baffled me further was the response from those around me. Nods of agreement and expressions of genuine intrigue surrounded me as if I had unveiled a profound truth about the complexities of beer. So naturally, I felt the pressure to amplify my intellectual façade. I casually threw in a comment about the beer’s ability to “express local terroir through indigenous microflora,” leaving me confused yet oddly satisfied with my audacious contribution.
As I reflect on this experience, I can’t help but chuckle at my previous musings during tastings. Just last month, I vividly remember describing a beer’s “mouthfeel complexity” when all I truly meant was that it had a thick texture—an obvious case of overcomplicating a simple observation.
In truth, I suspect I’m not alone in this whimsical charade of brewing language. It sometimes feels as though we’re all caught in a game of craft beer Mad Libs, repeating phrases we’ve heard from others, just trying to fit in and avoid being called out for our lack of knowledge.
