The Art of Pretentiousness: Navigating Craft Beer Conversations

Caught up in the moment, I started to extol how I “truly appreciated the characteristic brett interacting with the oak tannins to create some beautiful phenolic compounds.” In my head, I was painting a picture of craft beer sophistication; in reality, I had little concept of what ‘phenolic compounds’ truly entailed. My attempt at sounding erudite felt more like a mash-up of wine vocab I had picked up somewhere and snippets from a brewing podcast I’d half-listened to.

To my surprise, everyone around me nodded in agreement, their expressions suggesting I had just unveiled some great truth about beer. Riding the wave of this faux confidence, I ventured further into the realm of pretentiousness by mentioning the beer’s ability to “express local terroir through indigenous microflora.” Cue the internal cringe!

Earlier, I had even found myself describing a beer as having “mouthfeel complexity,” when the reality was that I simply thought it tasted thick. So it begs the question: are we all just playing a game of craft beer Mad Libs, stringing together phrases we’ve heard in hopes of impressing others?

It seems that in our passion for craft beer, we often slip into the habit of parroting terminology without a complete understanding. Although it can be amusing to reminisce about our more pretentious quotes, this raises an important conversation about authenticity within the craft beer community.
