Discovering Valmiermuižas: The Ultimate Latvian Brew
If you consider yourself a beer enthusiast, there’s an extraordinary gem from Latvia that deserves your attention—Valmiermuižas (pronounced VAL-meer-MWOY-zhahs). This remarkable craft beer has captured the hearts of many, yet for reasons that remain somewhat perplexing, it isn’t available for export, not even to Western Europe.
Having spent three memorable years in Riga, I immersed myself in the world of Valmiermuižas. To say I enjoyed this brew would be an understatement; it was a staple in my life. Following my time in Latvia, I explored various European countries, including Italy and Germany, and eagerly sought ways to get my hands on this beloved beer. Unfortunately, each attempt to procure it led to astronomical shipping costs that put it well out of reach—hundreds of dollars for just a case. Though I dream of the day I have the financial freedom to indulge in such luxuries, that day is not today.
The primary purpose of this post is to shine a spotlight on the brilliance of Valmiermuižas and to encourage fellow beer lovers visiting Latvia (and possibly Estonia) to seek it out and savor its unique flavor. This craft brewery deserves a spot on every beer aficionado’s list.
As I prepare for my upcoming move back to the United States, I’m filled with a sense of uncertainty about my chances of finding Valmiermuižas stateside. If my attempts to secure this treasure in Germany were fruitless, I harbor serious doubts about its availability in the U.S.
So, if you find yourself in Latvia, make it a point to track down Valmiermuižas. Trust me; it might just become your new favorite brew. Cheers!
