The Art of Pretentious Beer Talk: Confessions from a Craft Beer Novice
In the world of craft beer appreciation, there lies an intriguing paradox: many of us find ourselves spouting off terms and phrases that, while seemingly knowledgeable, often leave us scratching our heads in confusion. The other weekend, during a bottle share event, I dove headfirst into one of those moments. When someone opened a barrel-aged sour, I found myself effortlessly reciting, “I truly appreciate the characteristic brett interacting with the oak tannins to create some beautiful phenolic compounds.” The catch? I couldn’t quite define what “phenolic compounds” were if asked.
It appears I had combined wine jargon with some half-remembered theories from a brewing podcast, hoping to impress my fellow beer enthusiasts. Even more amusing was the fact that everyone nodded as if I had just unveiled some deep wisdom about the craft. Riding high on this moment, I added that the beer “expresses local terroir through indigenous microflora.” In hindsight, this was nothing more than a string of buzzwords that rolled off my tongue without any real understanding.
Just last month, I confidently critiqued a beer’s “mouthfeel complexity,” which was really just my way of trying to encapsulate a thick texture. Complete nonsense, really! It felt like I was participating in a game of craft beer Mad Libs, borrowing phrases from my peers without knowing their true meaning.
I can’t help but wonder: are we, as craft beer enthusiasts, often just echoing the words of those around us, hoping we won’t be called out for our lack of understanding?
