Discovering Valmiermuižas: The Latvian Beer That Captivated Me
If you ever find yourself in Latvia, make it a point to seek out Valmiermuižas (pronounced VAL-meer-MWOY-zhahs). This exceptional craft beer has left an indelible mark on my taste buds, yet, bafflingly, it remains elusive outside its homeland, particularly in western Europe.
During my three years living in Riga, I became something of a Valmiermuižas aficionado. To say I enjoyed this brew would be an understatement; I was truly a regular patron. Despite my subsequent travels through Italy and Germany, I’ve struggled to procure it. I’ve made multiple inquiries to the brewery about shipping options, only to find the costs soar sky-high—hundreds of dollars for just one case. One day, I hope to have the financial freedom to indulge in such luxuries, but for now, that remains a distant dream.
The purpose of this post is to shine a spotlight on this remarkable beer and encourage fellow beer lovers to seek it out when visiting Latvia or even neighboring Estonia. It’s an experience worth having!
As I prepare to relocate back to the United States in a few months, I can’t help but feel concerned about my chances of ever tasting Valmiermuižas again. My previous attempts to find it in Germany have raised doubts about its availability in the U.S. If you have the opportunity to enjoy this beer, seize it; you won’t regret it!
