IPAs: Im over it

The IPA Overload: Seeking Balance in the Beer Aisle

In the ever-evolving landscape of craft beer, it seems that India Pale Ales (IPAs) have become the reigning monarch, taking center stage in breweries and bars alike. While I wholeheartedly respect the passion that many beer enthusiasts have for their hoppy brews, I find myself longing for a simpler time—a time when a refreshing lager or a subtly flavored ale wasn’t so hard to come by.

Every time I stroll into my local beer store, I’m greeted by an overwhelming sea of IPAs, many of which boast labels screaming, “PUNCH IN THE MOUTH HOPS FLAVOR.” While the boldness of these hoppy concoctions has its charm, I can’t help but feel that the delicate balance and nuance of beer have been overshadowed.

What happened to the crisp lagers that dance refreshingly on the palate or the moderately flavored ales that offer a comforting drinkability? With over 85% of the shelf space dedicated to hop-heavy options, it feels increasingly challenging to locate the understated brews that once brought me joy.

So, here’s a toast to variety in the world of beer! Let’s not forget the delightful simplicity of a good lager or the subtle complexities of a well-crafted ale. Cheers to finding that perfect balance in our craft beer journeys!
