An Inside Look at the World of Craft Gin: Insights from an International Spirit Judging Expert
As someone deeply embedded in the global craft gin industry, I have the distinct privilege of sourcing and evaluating some of the finest independent spirits from around the world. Each year, I oversee the purchase and sale of approximately one million bottles of craft gin, collaborating closely with a diverse array of distillers and industry professionals. Today, I’m excited to share my expertise and insights through this blog post, and I welcome any questions you may have about this vibrant and evolving sector of the spirits world.
My Role in the Craft Gin Industry
Working at the intersection of procurement and quality assessment, my primary responsibilities involve identifying exceptional craft gins that showcase innovative distilling methods, unique botanical profiles, and compelling storytelling. This requires a keen palate, a thorough understanding of the latest trends, and close relationships with independent producers across multiple regions.
Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with hundreds of distillers—from seasoned artisans to up-and-coming innovators—all driven by a shared passion for quality and craftsmanship. My role not only involves purchasing but also providing constructive feedback to help distillers refine their products, ensuring that only the best reach discerning consumers worldwide.
Evaluating Spirit Quality as an International Judging Expert
In addition to my buying responsibilities, I serve as an international spirit judge, participating in various prestigious competitions and blind tastings. This experience allows me to compare craft gins on a global scale, evaluate them against rigorous standards, and stay abreast of emerging trends and techniques.
Judging at these events involves assessing parameters such as aroma, flavor complexity, balance, mouthfeel, and overall impression. It’s a challenging yet rewarding process that demands an unbiased palate and an appreciation for innovation in the craft.
Engagement and Questions
I’m here to share insights into the craft gin industry, discuss trends, or answer specific questions about distillation, judging, sourcing, or market dynamics. Whether you’re a fellow industry professional, a passionate gin enthusiast, or simply curious about how elite craft spirits are curated, I look forward to engaging with you.
Closing Note
Thank you for taking the time to learn about my role. While I might have humorously bungled the title earlier — blame my ADHD — my enthusiasm for craft gin and commitment to quality remain unwavering. Feel free to ask away, and let’s keep the conversation brewing!
