Embracing Solitude: The Art of Enjoying Craft Beer Alone
In a world that often equates enjoyment with social interaction, many of us carry an unspoken guilt associated with indulging in our favorite beverages alone. This sentiment rings particularly true for craft beer enthusiasts, who find joy in the complex flavors and nuances of a finely brewed beer, yet often hesitate to partake without company.
As someone who has transitioned to remote work over the past year, I’ve stumbled upon a comforting evening routine: selecting a unique and flavorful beer at around 6 PM, just as I begin preparing dinner. This isn’t about grabbing any beer; it’s about savoring those special creations that deserve my full attention—beers that excite the palate and provoke thought. Recently, however, I’ve begun to question whether my solo ritual borders on indulgent isolation. Am I committing a social faux pas by savoring these luxurious brews in solitude?
My partner expresses her skepticism. She often raises an eyebrow at my choice to indulge in a $35 barrel-aged sour or a $76 fruited lambic on a Wednesday evening, suggesting that I save such treats for gatherings where friends can appreciate them too. But therein lies my dilemma: the thought of sharing these experiences feels less appealing than immersing myself in the flavors and stories of the beer, free from the pressure of explaining why it isn’t merely an expensive beverage.
This makes me ponder: is my behavior unusual? I frequently come across social media posts showcasing people sharing rare and exquisite beers in a communal setting, which makes me wonder if I’m missing out on an essential communal experience. Yet, I can’t help but recall that most casual drinkers might struggle to differentiate between hop varieties like Citra and Mosaic.
So, I put the question to you, fellow enthusiasts: do you save your prized beers for gatherings, or is it perfectly acceptable to enjoy them solo? Is there merit in savoring the artistry of craft beer alone? Let’s celebrate the diverse ways we can appreciate beer—whether in companionship or solitude—and perhaps redefine what it means to cherish a good drink.
