The Solo Beer Experience: Embracing the Art of Enjoyment
Have you ever found yourself sipping a craft beer alone and felt a twinge of guilt? Many of us associate the enjoyment of a good brew with social gatherings, yet there’s something uniquely satisfying about indulging in a fine beer on your own.
Over the past year, while working remotely, I developed a delightful evening ritual: around 6 PM, I select a distinctive beer and savor it while preparing dinner. Not just any beer, mind you—I’m talking about carefully curated selections, bursting with flavor and complexity, worthy of appreciation. However, lately, I’ve wrestled with the notion that enjoying this experience alone somehow diminishes its value.
My partner has pointed out that it seems a bit extravagant to open a $35 barrel-aged sour or a $76 fruited lambic just for myself on a midweek evening. “Why not save it for when we have friends over?” she asks, suggesting that these unique brews are meant to be shared. But in truth, I find more joy in savoring the intricate Brett notes in solitude rather than feeling the need to justify my selection to others.
This raises a thought-provoking question: is there something inherently wrong with enjoying exquisite beer in solitude? While scrolling through social media, I often see posts featuring communal beer tastings where aficionados gather over rare and highly sought-after brews. It stirs a curiosity within—am I missing out on a vital communal experience? Yet, it’s essential to remember that when it comes to flavor, not everyone can discern the subtleties between hops like Citra and Mosaic.
So, I wonder, how do others approach their beer-drinking habits? Do you reserve your finest bottles for social occasions, or do you relish the opportunity to appreciate good beer on your own terms? Let’s celebrate the individual journey of taste, whether it’s enjoyed in solitude or shared among friends. After all, great beer should be enjoyed, regardless of the company. Cheers!
