Does anyone else feel guilty drinking beer alone because it’s supposed to be a social experience?

Embracing Solitude with a Fine Beer: Is It Socially Acceptable?

Many of us associate enjoying a cold beverage with social gatherings and shared experiences. However, I’ve recently found myself grappling with feelings of guilt over a personal ritual that brings me joy. After spending a significant amount of time working from home, I’ve cultivated the practice of selecting a meticulously chosen beer to savor while cooking dinner each night. It’s become a cherished moment for me—one that involves a beer with depth and complexity, worthy of my full attention.

Yet, there’s an underlying sense of unease that has started to accompany my solitary enjoyment. My girlfriend often chimes in, suggesting I save those extravagant beers for when we have company, believing that the true value of such brews lies in sharing them. She doesn’t quite understand the joy I find in experiencing the intricate flavors of a $35 barrel-aged sour or a $76 fruited lambic on a quiet Wednesday evening. For me, it’s not about the price tag; it’s about savoring each sip in solitude without the need for explanation.

This has led me to question the norms surrounding beer consumption. Are we expected to reserve our finest drinks for social occasions, or is there merit in appreciating them alone? I see numerous posts celebrating communal bottle shares around unique and rare beers which can leave me wondering if my solitary indulgence is missing an essential aspect of the experience. After all, I know that many people might not even recognize the difference between two popular hop varieties, Citra and Mosaic.

So, what’s the verdict? Do others find joy in enjoying their favorite brews alone, or is it more socially acceptable to save those treasured bottles for gatherings? Should we feel guilty for embracing those quiet moments of personal enjoyment, or is it perfectly fine to relish great beer in the comfort of our own company? Cheers to the ongoing debate—whether we toast alone or in a crowd!
