The Art of Pretentious Beer Talk: Confessions from a Craft Beer Enthusiast
Craft beer culture is rich with jargon and sophisticated terminology that can leave even the most seasoned enthusiasts feeling a tad overwhelmed. At a recent bottle share event, I found myself caught in a web of pretentious beer speak that, upon reflection, may not have been as profound as I hoped.
As someone eagerly exploring the vast world of craft brews, I was excited when a barrel-aged sour was unveiled. With an air of confidence, I began to wax poetic about how I “truly appreciated the interaction between the characteristic brett and the oak tannins, resulting in exquisite phenolic compounds.” However, the truth is, I couldn’t quite define what “phenolic compounds” meant. It turns out that I had mixed wine lingo with information I vaguely recalled from a brewing podcast.
What made the moment more confounding was the chorus of nodding heads around the table, which only encouraged me to elaborate further. I confidently added that this brew “expressed local terroir through indigenous microflora.” In that moment, I felt like an imposter, disguising my lack of understanding with layers of sophisticated language.
This isn’t an isolated incident for me. Just last month, I found myself describing a beer’s “mouthfeel complexity” when, in reality, I simply meant it had a thick texture. It made me question whether I was genuinely appreciating the nuances of craft beer or merely engaging in a game of craft beer mad libs.
Do others experience this as well? It seems that a good portion of our conversations may revolve around parroting what we’ve heard from others, hoping we won’t be called out for our lack of knowledge. Whether it’s discussions about yeast strains, hop varieties, or flavor profiles, often I wonder if we’re indulging in pretentious banter more for show than for substance.
