What’s the best way to explain to my friends that there’s a difference between ‘beer’ and ‘craft beer’ without sounding pretentious?

Navigating the Divide: Explaining Craft Beer to Friends Without Pretense

Many beer enthusiasts have encountered a relatable challenge: how do you convey the distinction between ordinary beer and craft beer to friends who may not share the same appreciation? It can be a tricky conversation, as you don’t want to come across as pretentious while also wanting to highlight the rich diversity in beer.

Recently, I’ve noticed a recurring theme among my social circle. When plans are made to “grab some beer,” it often involves a predictable trip to buy a case of the cheapest options available. During a recent gathering, I attempted to elevate our experience by bringing along some carefully selected craft beers. However, I observed everyone take merely a polite sip before returning to their usual, less adventurous choices.

Whenever I attempt to engage them with discussions about hops, brewing styles, or different flavor profiles, I can almost see their eyes glaze over. It’s as if I trigger a defensive mechanism where they mentally retreat at the mere mention of craft beer lingo.

This raises the question: should I simply overlook the vast spectrum of flavors that sets craft beer apart from mass-produced varieties? Are we truly expected to equate a crisp, flavorful Belgian Tripel with a bland lager? It feels a bit disheartening to think that such unique beers get brushed aside in favor of something that resembles “carbonated bread water.”

Has anyone else faced this dilemma? Share your experiences on how you navigated these conversations or encouraged your friends to explore the wonderful world of craft beer. After all, there’s so much to discover, and it would be great to do so together!
