The High Price of Craft Beer: When Splurging Doesn’t Pay Off
Craft beer enthusiasts often find themselves in the exhilarating world of unique flavors and rare brews, but sometimes that excitement comes at a steep price. Recently, I had an experience that made me ponder the value of a single beer.
On a whim, I invested $47 in a bottle of barrel-aged imperial stout that promised an extraordinary experience. It had been aging for 18 months in bourbon barrels and was infused with Madagascar vanilla and Ecuadorian cacao. The staff at the bottle shop touted its prestigious GABF gold medal and spoke passionately about the brewery’s dedication to meticulous barrel selection. Their enthusiasm was infectious, leading me to believe that I was purchasing liquid gold—a beer that would be unforgettable.
Upon returning home, I carefully chilled the bottle, selected the perfect glassware, and prepared to savor my investment. However, as I took that first sip, I was met with a taste reminiscent of rich chocolate milk, followed by a hint of bourbon. While it was enjoyable, I couldn’t help but think, “This is good, but is it truly worth $47?” The realization struck me that for that price, I could have indulged in a quality bottle of bourbon instead.
The most disheartening aspect of my purchase was my desire to convince myself that it was a sublime experience worthy of the hefty price tag. I found myself posting images on Untappd, Facebook, and Instagram, describing the “complex flavor profile” and “exceptional barrel character,” all the while trying to justify my extravagant expenditure to myself and others.
In hindsight, I realized that I had fallen victim to the allure of hype—believing that a higher price automatically equated to superior quality. I know I’m not alone in this feeling. Many beer lovers have lamented similar experiences when chasing after that one special bottle.
This leads to an interesting question: How much have you spent on a single beer, and did it truly live up to its cost? Join me in sharing stories of our greatest splurges, both regrettable and rewarding, as we navigate the sometimes confusing landscape of craft beer.
