Recently, I had an experience at a new bar that got me pondering the unwritten rules of tipping, particularly when it comes to bartenders who truly understand their craft. Picture this: I walked in and ordered a Belgian gaya, fully bracing myself for the usual mispronunciation that so often accompanies trying to order more obscure beers. Instead, the bartender confidently pronounced “gueuze” correctly, explaining, “the guhz is excellent,” as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
What unfolded next left me pleasantly surprised. She not only knew the proper pronunciation but also began to share insights on the wild fermentation process behind the drink, even recommending a cheese pairing without my prompting. It was refreshing to encounter someone who clearly possessed both expertise and a passion for craft beverages.
Given this remarkable interaction, I found myself questioning conventional tipping norms. My tip amounted to an impressive 30%, driven by genuine admiration for her knowledge and service. But it raised an interesting dilemma: Is there a standard or guideline for tipping based on a bartender’s expertise?
