The Etiquette of Tipping: When Expertise Deserves More
Last night, I had the pleasure of visiting a newly opened bar where I ordered a Belgian gueuze, expecting the usual mispronunciation. Much to my surprise, the bartender confidently pronounced it “the guhz” and proceeded to share her knowledge about the fascinating wild fermentation process behind the beer. She even recommended a cheese pairing, all without prompting from me.
I found myself a bit taken aback, as it’s rare to encounter a bartender who not only knows their product but also serves it impeccably. Most often, bartenders shy away from saying the name at all or mispronounce it while filling whatever glass is nearest. This particular bartender’s expertise was undeniable, and it made the experience all the more enjoyable.
In light of her exceptional service and knowledge, I decided to leave a 30% tip as a gesture of my appreciation. However, this experience left me pondering an interesting question: Is there an unspoken guideline for tipping based on a bartender’s knowledge? Should we factor in their expertise, particularly when it comes to specialized beverages like craft beers?
It’s worth considering whether tips should reflect the quality of service that goes beyond the basics. If a bartender goes the extra mile to inform and educate customers about the drinks they serve—not just reciting the menu but enriching the experience with their knowledge—should that warrant a higher tip?
This encounter certainly highlighted how much more enjoyable our experiences can be when bartenders are enthusiastic and informed. So, next time you receive excellent service, especially from a bartender who understands their craft, think about what your tip says about your appreciation for their expertise. After all, in the world of hospitality, knowledge can make all the difference.
Whether it’s a meticulous craft beer or an expertly mixed cocktail, recognizing and rewarding knowledgeable service can elevate your overall experience at the bar. So how do you approach tipping when a bartender impresses you with their skill and knowledge? Let’s share our thoughts!
