The Etiquette of Tipping: Recognizing Expertise Behind the Bar
Last night, I had the pleasure of visiting a new bar and ordered a Belgian gueuze, fully expecting the usual struggle with its pronunciation. To my surprise, the bartender confidently pronounced it “the guhz is excellent,” as if it were second nature. She didn’t stop there; she began sharing her insights into the wild fermentation process and even recommended a cheese pairing without me prompting her.
Sitting at the bar, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration. In my experience, many bartenders either shy away from attempting such nuanced pronunciations or mispronounce it with an air of confidence as they pour from the tap. This bartender, however, not only recognized the drink but also seemed genuinely passionate about it, providing an elevated experience that transcended the typical bar outing.
As a result of her expertise and attentive service, I found myself tipping 30%. However, this left me pondering an interesting question: Is there an unspoken guideline when it comes to tipping based on a bartender’s knowledge and skill? Should we consider a “sliding scale” for the correct pronunciation of beverages? What is the appropriate tipping practice when we encounter a bartender who is well-informed and truly engaged with what they serve?
In the world of bartending, as in many service industries, knowledge can significantly enhance the customer experience. A skilled bartender can turn a simple drink order into a delightful exploration of flavors and pairings. It may be worth considering that when gauging tips, we might take into account not only the service provided but also the expertise and understanding of the beverages being poured. After all, exceptional service deserves recognition, especially when it comes from a place of genuine enthusiasm and knowledge.
Next time you’re at a bar and find yourself served by a knowledgeable bartender, perhaps you’ll join me in rewarding their efforts with an appreciative tip. After all, it’s those moments of surprising expertise that elevate our dining experiences and deserve to be celebrated.
