Newcastle Brown Ale Makes a Triumphant Return to the U.S. Market
In an exciting development for beer enthusiasts, Newcastle Brown Ale is once again making its way to the United States, this time as a proper import. The much-loved British classic, recognizable by its iconic blue star label, has returned after a detour that left many fans disappointed with its hoppy iteration produced locally in Chicago.
On December 26, a post on the BeerAdvocate forum sparked a wave of excitement when a shopper in North Carolina discovered a six-pack of the authentic U.K. version of Newcastle Brown Ale. Unlike the previous version brewed by Lagunitas, which leaned heavily on a hoppy profile, this return to form promises to deliver the smooth, caramel notes that true fans of the ale have been longing for.
Skeptics may naturally question the validity of an anonymous forum claim, but I reached out to Heineken for clarification. The company’s response was affirmative: by spring 2024, Lagunitas ceased operations at its Chicago facility and halted domestic production of Newcastle Brown Ale. This shift allowed for the beloved brew to be crafted once again at Heineken’s Tadcaster brewery in Northern England. Subsequently, fresh batches of the classic ale made their way across the Atlantic, landing back on our store shelves just in time for the new year.
Adena McMahon, the director of innovation at Heineken USA, expressed enthusiasm about the revival, stating, “We’re bringing back the original recipe.” This move is sure to rekindle the love for a beer that has become synonymous with easy drinking and rich flavor—qualities that earned Newcastle Brown Ale its esteemed reputation.
For loyal fans and new drinkers alike, the return of the authentic Newcastle Brown Ale is an opportunity to savor the essence of a true British classic once more. Keep an eye out in your local stores for its reintroduction and celebrate the return of a rightful favorite!
