Does anyone else get treated like a beer snob for ordering literally anything that isn’t a macro lager?

The Craft Beer Dilemma: Navigating Conversations About Preferences

When it comes to choosing a drink at a restaurant, those of us who enjoy craft beer often find ourselves navigating a delicate social landscape. Recently, I experienced this firsthand during a dinner with coworkers. When the server approached and I ordered their house IPA, I was immediately met with a response that made me feel like I had just announced my allegiance to a rare vintage wine.

A colleague remarked with a hint of disbelief, “Wow, you’re really into that craft beer stuff,” as though ordering something other than a standard macro lager was an act of pretentiousness. In his eyes, the choice to savor the nuanced flavors of a well-crafted IPA sealed my fate as a “beer snob.” Ironically, the same individual opted for a Stella Artois, which he deemed a more ‘sophisticated’ option, failing to recognize the inherent contradiction in ordering an imported beer while dismissing local brews.

As I attempted to clarify that hops are not some bizarre gimmick but rather a vital component of many flavorful beers, he remained unconvinced. To him, any beer that wasn’t Bud Light was somehow an unnecessary extravagance. Meanwhile, he paid a premium for his “imported” lager that, in my humble opinion, tasted no more distinctive than its domestic counterparts — an irony not lost on me.

This left me wondering: how do we engage in conversations about our beer choices without perpetuating the stereotype of the elitist beer enthusiast? My only intention was to enjoy a beverage that had depth and character. However, it seems that simply ordering an IPA places one firmly in the “craft beer aficionado” category, eliciting comments that equate a love for flavor with an affinity for the bizarre.

So, is there anyone else out there who faces similar challenges? Do you find yourself defending your preference for a quality brew to those who consider a lime-topped Corona to be adventurous? How do you navigate these conversations without coming across as a self-proclaimed beer connoisseur? Sharing our experiences might just help us all find common ground when discussing the marvelous world of beer, beyond the simple labels that some insist upon.
