Does anyone else get treated like a beer snob for ordering literally anything that isn’t a macro lager?

Navigating the Craft Beer Conversation: A Personal Experience

Craft beer enthusiasts often find themselves in amusing yet frustrating situations, especially when dining out with friends or colleagues. A recent outing reminded me of this dynamic as I encountered a typical yet all too relatable scenario.

Last week, I joined some coworkers for dinner, and when the server approached to take our drink orders, I opted for the house IPA. To my surprise, I was met with an incredulous response. One of my colleagues exclaimed, “Wow, you’re really into that craft beer stuff,” as if I had chosen a wine pairing for a simple chicken sandwich.

As the conversation unfolded, one coworker proudly declared his preference for a “normal beer that tastes like beer.” This led him to order a Stella Artois, which he claimed was superior because it was “imported.” It struck me as ironic; here I was savoring a local brewery’s IPA, while he spent a couple of extra dollars on a beer that many would argue lacks distinct character.

What ensued was a spirited discussion about hops and the intricacies of craft brewing. I tried to explain that hops aren’t some bizarre concoction but rather a key ingredient that adds depth and flavor to beer. Yet, to my colleague, anything beyond mass-produced lagers was essentially pretentious. It was baffling to see someone equate authenticity with a popular, yet fairly standard, brew.

By the end of the night, I was left feeling defensive about my personal tastes. I find it disheartening that expressing an interest in craft brews can label you as a “beer snob.” It seems there’s a misconception that if you enjoy anything beyond the realm of macro lagers, you must have an elitist approach to beer.

Does anyone else experience this? It can be frustrating to feel like you need to justify your preferences to individuals who think that a lime in their Corona is the height of exotic sophistication. It’s a challenge to engage in these conversations calmly and enjoyably without coming across as condescending. After all, it’s all about appreciating flavor, and there’s a whole world of craft beer worth exploring.
