Does anyone else get treated like a beer snob for ordering literally anything that isn’t a macro lager?

The Unwarranted Stigma of Craft Beer Enthusiasm

Have you ever found yourself treated like a beer snob simply for opting for a craft beer over a mainstream lager? I recently experienced this while dining out with colleagues, and it was quite the eye-opener.

During our dinner, when the server approached to take drink orders, I chose the house IPA, intrigued by its unique flavors. Almost instantly, I was met with the incredulous reaction typically reserved for someone ordering an extravagant wine pairing with their meal. One of my coworkers leaned in with a dismissive air and remarked how he didn’t need “all those fancy flavors” — clearly equating my craft beer choice with elitism. He then proceeded to order a Stella Artois, somehow believing that “imported” status automatically qualified it as a more refined option.

As I attempted to elucidate the complexities of hops — which, contrary to his assumption, are not just some exotic addition — he seemed entirely convinced that anything beyond the realm of Bud Light was simply pretentious. Ironically, he was shelling out more money for his “premium European lager,” which tasted to me like a heavier version of an American lager with additional sweetness.

It makes me wonder how one can engage in discussions about beer preferences without being pegged as a snob. My intentions were far from elitist; I simply craved a beverage with genuine flavor and character. Yet, somehow, ordering an IPA signals a divergence from the norm, relegating me to the category of “those craft beer people” lurking in the shadows.

Have you ever found yourself defending your choice of brew to those who view a simple Corona with lime as an adventurous concoction? If you’re caught in similar situations, remember: your preference for craft beer is not a statement on others’ choices, but rather an appreciation for the art of brewing. Cheers to enjoying what you love, regardless of what others may think!
