The Curious Case of Craft Beer Babble: Have You Ever Pretended to Understand?
Craft beer enthusiasts often find themselves in conversations steeped in terminology that, if we’re honest, can sometimes feel a bit over the top. Recently, I attended a bottle share event where a barrel-aged sour was opened, and I instinctively fell into the trap of pretentious craft beer jargon. As the rich aromas wafted through the air, I proclaimed, “I truly appreciate the characteristic brett interacting with the oak tannins to create beautifully complex phenolic compounds.”
If I’m being completely transparent, I have no real understanding of what phenolic compounds are. I suspect I was simply blending wine jargon with snippets from a brewing podcast I half-listened to months ago. The most amusing part? Everyone around me nodded gravely, as if I had uttered some profound insight. Caught up in the moment, I went on to state that the beer “expresses local terroir through indigenous microflora.”
Looking back, I realized that I may have been speaking a kind of craft beer gobbledygook. Just last month, I was caught off guard when I described a beer’s “mouthfeel complexity,” when in reality, I simply meant that it had a rich, thick texture. It made me wonder: are we all just regurgitating phrases we’ve heard in an effort to sound knowledgeable while secretly hoping no one calls our bluff?
This experience prompted me to question whether others feel similarly in these beer-fueled discussions. Are we all just participants in an unwritten game of “craft beer mad libs,” tossing around terms and phrases without truly understanding their meaning?
