Discovering Valmiermuižas: The Beer You Need to Try
If you’re a fan of craft beer, you’re likely always on the lookout for unique brews that offer something special. Let me introduce you to a gem from Latvia: Valmiermuižas, pronounced VAL-meer-MWOY-zhahs. This remarkable beer has captured the hearts (and taste buds) of many, yet for reasons I can’t quite fathom, it is not exported—at least not to Western Europe.
Years ago, I found myself living in Riga for three splendid years, during which Valmiermuižas became a staple in my life. To say I appreciated this beer is an understatement; I was practically a regular at local establishments. After relocating to other parts of Europe, including Italy and Germany, I became desperate to get my hands on it again. I even reached out to the brewery to explore shipping options, only to be met with jaw-dropping prices that were far beyond what I could justify—hundreds of dollars for a single case. If only I had a bit of “F.U. money” to spare!
This blog post aims not only to highlight the outstanding qualities of Valmiermuižas but also to encourage any beer enthusiasts planning a trip to Latvia (or perhaps even Estonia) to seek it out and indulge in its exquisite flavors.
As I prepare to return to the States in a few months, my hopes of enjoying Valmiermuižas again seem dim. If I couldn’t manage to snag it while living in Germany, I have little faith that obtaining it in the U.S. will be any easier. Don’t miss your chance—if you find yourself in Latvia, make it a point to experience this extraordinary craft beer for yourself!
