Discovering Valmiermuižas: The Latvian Craft Beer You Need to Try
If you’re a craft beer enthusiast, there’s a gem tucked away in Latvia that has captured the hearts of many—Valmiermuižas (pronounced VAL-meer-MWOY-zhahs). This exceptional brew is notable not only for its delightful flavors but also for its unfortunate lack of availability outside of its home country. Despite whispers of its greatness, Valmiermuižas remains elusive, with no exports to most parts of Europe, let alone the United States.
My journey with Valmiermuižas began during my three-year stint in Riga, where I quickly became a devoted fan. To say I was a regular patron of this remarkable beer would be an understatement. The experience of savoring Valmiermuižas across various seasons in Latvia was simply unforgettable. It has been challenging to replicate that love since moving to other European nations, such as Italy and Germany. My attempts to procure this beloved beer for home – which would have involved significant financial investment – have proven fruitless, with costs that would lead most to think twice, sometimes adding up to hundreds of dollars for just a case.
With a move back to the States on the horizon, my hopes of enjoying Valmiermuižas again are dwindling. If I couldn’t find a way to bring this treasure to Germany, I can only imagine the challenge involved in accessing it stateside.
So, to my fellow beer aficionados: if you find yourself in Latvia—or even Estonia—do not miss the chance to taste Valmiermuižas. This craft beer is a delightful representation of Latvian brewing prowess and a treasure worth seeking out. Whether you’re a casual drinker or a devoted connoisseur, your palate will thank you for this expedition into one of Latvia’s finest brews. Cheers!
