Discovering Valmiermuižas: Your New Favorite Craft Beer
If you’re on the hunt for a remarkable craft beer, let me introduce you to Valmiermuižas (pronounced VAL-meer-MWOY-zhahs), a hidden gem from Latvia. This exceptional brew has captured my heart, but curiously enough, it seems that it’s not available for export, even to neighboring Western European countries.
Having spent three wonderful years in Riga, I quickly became an aficionado of Valmiermuižas, savoring its unique flavors on numerous occasions. My affection for this beer runs deep, and you could say I was more than just a casual drinker—Valmiermuižas was a significant part of my daily life.
After relocating across Europe—including stints in Italy and Germany—I tried to acquire this delightful beer, reaching out to distributors and breweries alike. Unfortunately, the prices were astronomical, with quotes often reaching into the hundreds of dollars for a mere case. While dreams of having “F.U. money” to splurge on my favorite brew dance in my head, the reality remains that it’s just not feasible at the moment.
This article serves two purposes: to share my unwavering love for this incredible craft beer and to encourage fellow beer enthusiasts who find themselves in Latvia (or even Estonia) to seek it out and savor its distinctive taste. Trust me, it’s worth the hunt!
As I prepare to return to the United States in just a few months, I can’t help but feel disheartened at the prospect of not being able to enjoy Valmiermuižas again anytime soon. If I struggled to find it in Germany, my hopes for obtaining it in the U.S. are slim. So, if you ever have the chance to visit Latvia, don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience Valmiermuižas—it truly is a beer that ranks among the best.
