Discovering Valmiermuižas: A Hidden Gem of Latvian Craft Beer

If you’re a fan of craft beer and you haven’t encountered Valmiermuižas (pronounced VAL-meer-MWOY-zhahs), you’re missing out on a true treasure from Latvia. This remarkable brew has captured the hearts of many, including mine, during my three-year residence in Riga. However, there’s a perplexing catch: despite its excellence, Valmiermuižas is not exported, not even to neighboring regions like Western Europe.

During my time in Latvia, I became a devoted aficionado of Valmiermuižas. I savored every sip, and it became a staple in my life. After relocating to other parts of Europe, including Italy and Germany, I attempted to procure some of this fine beer once again. Unfortunately, my searches only led to outrageous prices—hundreds of dollars per case—making it clear that my longing for this brew was not financially feasible at present.

This post serves as an invitation to fellow beer lovers: if you ever find yourself in Latvia (or possibly Estonia), make it a priority to seek out Valmiermuižas. Trust me, you won’t regret it! The unique flavors and craftsmanship that go into every bottle are well worth experiencing.

As I prepare to return to the United States in a few months, I can’t help but feel a sense of loss. If I struggled to find access to Valmiermuižas in Germany, I have little hope of locating it back home.
