How to become my best friend (spoiler – find me Valmiermuižas)

Discovering the Hidden Gem of Latvian Beer: Valmiermuižas

When it comes to exceptional craft beers, one name stands out in the Latvian brewing landscape: Valmiermuižas (pronounced VAL-meer-MWOY-zhahs). This delightful beverage boasts a rich flavor profile and a brewing tradition that deserves to be recognized globally. Yet, for reasons that baffle many beer enthusiasts, Valmiermuižas is not widely exported, even to neighboring Western European nations.

During my time living in Riga, Latvia, I had the pleasure of indulging in Valmiermuižas for an impressive three years. To say I had a fondness for this beer would be an understatement—I became something of a connoisseur. Unfortunately, my quest to enjoy this superb brew outside of Latvia hit a snag once I relocated to other parts of Europe, like Italy and Germany. Despite multiple attempts to have it shipped, I discovered that the price was astronomical, with cases costing hundreds of dollars. While I dream of the day I’ll have enough “F.U. money” to splurge, that day is not today.

This blog post serves two purposes: to introduce you to the remarkable craft beer that is Valmiermuižas and to encourage fellow beer aficionados to seek it out during their travels in Latvia and possibly Estonia. If you find yourself in either of these beautiful countries, immerse yourself in the local brewing culture and make it a point to sample this exquisite beer.

As I prepare for my impending move back to the United States, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment. If I struggled to find a way to purchase Valmiermuižas while living in Germany, I have my doubts about its availability in the U.S. But I remain hopeful that one day this marvelous brew will reach shores beyond its native land. Until then, if you ever get the chance, please drink a Valmiermuižas for me—you might just find your new favorite beer!
