Title: How Craft Beer Helped Me Overcome a Troubling Relationship with Alcohol
We all have our struggles, and for some, the battle with alcohol can be particularly arduous. I come from a family where alcoholism casts a long shadow, and like many college students, I found myself caught in a cycle of excessive drinking. What began as casual weekend gatherings quickly escalated. Before I knew it, my daily routine involved consuming alcohol to the point of blacking out, and the consequences were dire: close calls with choking and the slow alienation of friends and family. It felt as though I was spiraling out of control.
But then, everything changed when I stumbled upon my first craft beer. I remember it vividly — Young’s Double Chocolate Stout. At first, I purchased it on a whim, hoping to find a more palatable alternative to the harshness of whiskey I often relied on. When I took my first sip, it was like a revelation. I never imagined that an alcoholic beverage could possess such rich flavors and complexities. Up until that moment, my experience with alcohol had been purely about inebriation, with little regard for enjoyment.
Emboldened by this delightful discovery, I made a conscious decision to step away from spirits. I became more intentional in my drinking habits, focusing on quality rather than quantity. Now, I relish the experience of enjoying a few beers, savoring each one for its unique taste and craftsmanship. This shift in perspective has not only allowed me to moderate my intake but has also ignited a passion for craft beer that I never knew existed.
Since then, I’ve explored the wonderful world of brewing, attending tastings, touring local breweries, and learning about the artistry that goes into each pint. My newfound enthusiasm has even sparked dreams of entering the industry, whether by opening my own brewery or contributing to the craft in some way.
It may sound cliché, but finding craft beer was a pivotal moment in my journey toward reclaiming my life. I wanted to share my story to highlight that sometimes, the unexpected can lead to profound changes. Cheers to the power of discovery and to all the craft brews that make life a little brighter!
